New Mausoleum Opens at Maryhill Catholic Cemetery
Niles, Illinois
Maryhill Cemetery in Niles, Illinois will offer over 3,000 crypts & 1,000 niches at seven levels. The architectural firm of Mekus Studios has designed a mausoleum with unique mosaics, statues, and stained glass reflecting our Christian faith.
At the focal point of the mausoleum, Gianfranco Tassara of Milwaukee has created an eleven-foot bronze statue of St. John the Baptist pouring water over Jesus. Suspended high atop the entrance to the mausoleum will be a stained glass panel, by Pickel Studios of Vero Beach, Florida depicting St. Mary as the Mystic Rose. She is placed in a field of cascading roses, which reminds us of her love for all.
A spectacular and unique mosaic of Our Lady of Czestochowa will cover the actual crypt fronts on one section of the complex. Each individual, unique crypt front will be one section of the overall mosaic. The mosaic shows the gates of the monastery of "Jasna Gora" (Bright Hill) from which Maryhill Cemetery draws its name.
Finally, a small niche unit attached to the mausoleum complex will feature three stainless steel crosses designed by St. Louis artist Mark Dotzler. Entitled "Cross Shadow" the design is intended to cast the shadow of The Cross of Jesus on the niches year after year. The Cross of Jesus was given a special inner light/glow to represent that inner light given to each of us.
In 2006, Maryhill opened its first monument section for families who prefer their own monument lot. In 2007, Maryhill has added a new shrine, The Queen of Peace, in section 3, a centrally located beautiful tree-covered section.

Good Shepherd Catholic Cemetery Opening
Orland Park, Illinois
The Catholic Cemeteries of Chicago is pleased to announce that on Sunday, April 17, 2005, Good Shepherd Sunday, Most Rev. John R. Gorman, D.D. Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, blessed Good Shepherd Catholic Cemetery, the first new Catholic cemetery in over 45 years. It is located in the south suburb of Orland Park. Good Shepherd Cemetery has been in the planning for several years, with the help in design by Mekus Studios of Chicago and construction by Pepper Construction. This beautiful new cemetery is all we hoped for and will serve the far southwest suburban families of the archdiocese.
As you enter the cemetery, you will be greeted by a beautiful twenty foot steel cross with an inlaid bronze shepherd staff, designed by Saunders Schultz of St. Louis and Theodore J. Wofford, also of St. Louis.
To your right is Good Shepherd Garden Mausoleum. As you approach the mausoleum, you will notice a fifty foot stainless steel bell tower designed by Schulmerich Bells of Sellersville, Pa. The mausoleum will have 2576 front and rear crypts and 1032 single crypts. It will also have 1152 niches for cremated remains. 384 of the niches have mosaic fronts designed by Paul Pickel of Pickel studios of Vero Beach, Florida. Mr. Pickel also designed the ten colored circular windows for the mausoleum. A sculpture of the Good Shepherd, also designed by Saunders Schultz and Theodore J. Wofford, graces our beautiful Garden Mausoleum.
To your left as you enter is a cemetery section dedicated to the Good Shepherd. In the center of the section, there is a twenty-six foot stainless steel statue of the Good Shepherd. The statue is designed by Dale Lamphere of South Dakota, and sits upon a seven foot base of black granite by Bert Gast of Chicago.
The cemetery office is located in the center of the cemetery. The office will include family rooms for families to meet when making a selection, three interment chapels for cemetery services on the day of a burial, and a service room for vault sealing. The four colored glass windows for the office/chapel complex are designed by Gianfranco Tassara of Inspired Artisans of Milwaukee.
There are three sections of approximately 12 acres for selection of graves. These sections are available for selection of shrine graves, marker graves, upright monument lots and estate lots for private family mausoleums.
