Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery was the first cemetery to be opened in the western area of the Archdiocese. Mount Carmel is the site of the Bishops' Mausoleum where seven Bishops, Archbishops and auxiliary Bishops are entombed, including most recently, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, who was entombed in 1996. Mount Carmel maintained its own office until 1965 when its office was merged with that of neighboring Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Mount Carmel is particularly noted for the number of individual family mausoleums throughout the cemetery - in excess of 400 - which represent the burial tradition of many of the Italian Catholic families served by the cemetery.
