Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery represents the first of the "modern" cemeteries. Queen of Heaven was the first cemetery to develop the Religious Shrine section idea, starting with the Sacred Heart Shrine. (Section 30) in 1951. Queen of Heaven was also the first to develop cemetery-erected Shared Family Memorials whereby custom-designed monuments could be built to serve two or four families. The complete Cemetery Service concept also originated in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Section 40; Immaculate Heart of Mary Shrine, Mother Cabrini Shrine and Saint Catherine of Siena Shrine. These sections contain graves which include all cemetery costs in a single price. This means that at one time, under one arrangement, a family can provide for graves, interment, grave box, grave identification, grave care and have no further expenses of any kind. Probably the two most prominent features in Queen of Heaven Cemetery are the Queen of Heaven Indoor Mausoleum, which contains 30,000 crypts, and Christ the King Garden Crypt Complex, which contains over 20,000 crypts.
