DECORATION POLICY
Our consecrated cemetery grounds serve as a sacred resting place shared by our entire Catholic community. To maintain the beauty, safety, and reverence of these holy spaces, we kindly ask all families to be mindful of their neighbors and the dedicated cemetery staff who care for our grounds.
Creating a Space of Mutual Respect
When honoring your loved one, we ask everyone to ensure that tributes are kept to a modest size. Loose or oversized arrangements can encroach on neighboring graves, create safety hazards, and inadvertently hinder our grounds crews from performing the Corporal Work of Mercy—burying the dead with the utmost care and respect.
Prohibited Items
To ensure a safe environment for all visitors and staff, the following items are strictly prohibited on gravesites:
- Prohibited Items: Live candles, metal objects (stands, easels, shepherd hooks), and breakable materials (glass, ceramic, lawn ornaments), grave coverings, landscape materials, border edgings (wood, metal, stone, paving, decorative stones), and any form of fencing or enclosure.
Please Note: Because our cemeteries remain open to the public 365 days a year, Catholic Cemeteries cannot be held responsible for stolen items, or for damage and loss resulting from natural elements.
To preserve the dignity of our grounds, Catholic Cemeteries of Chicago reserves the right to remove any decorations at any time that do not conform to our decoration policies, pose a safety risk, have become weathered/damaged, or interfere with our day-to-day operations or maintenance.
